Although the first "American Indian Day" was declared by the State of New York in 1916, a month long recognition of Native Americans was not achieved until 1990, when November was declared National American Indian Heritage Month.

The First Americans Today - This detailed lesson plan from A to Z Teacher Stuff is designed for 4th graders, but can be adapted to different grade levels. Be sure to check out the link to the related lesson, "Creating Stories Using Pictographs."

Not Just Another Native American Lesson Plan - This highly structured 2nd grade thematic unit was presented at the 1999 Core Knowledge National conference. As with most of the lesson plans presented here, it can easily be adapted for different ages or grade levels.  It is in .pdf format, so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it.  See below for a link to download Acrobat Reader if you do not already have it.

Native American Thematic Unit - This well thought-out inter-disciplinary unit has some great information for students and teachers.

Internet Public Library Native American Section - This website provides information on Native North American authors with bibliographies of their published works, biographical information, and links to online resources including interviews, online texts and tribal websites. The website primarily contains information on contemporary Native American authors, although some historical authors are represented.

Internet School Library Media Center Native American Author Page - You'll find biography, bibliography, lesson plans, online e-texts and critical reviews of selected authors whose works are taught in the public schools or the university level. Literature includes adult and juvenile.
