ASTRONOMY CLUB CALENDAR 2009 - 2010

August, 2009

August 6 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of the Americas, Europe, Africa, and western Asia. (NASA Eclipse Information)

August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak.

August 14 - Jupiter at Opposition. The giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth. This is the best time to view  and photograph Jupiter and its moons.

August 26 - First Day of School

September, 2009

September 7 - Labor Day Holiday

September 22 - Close Conjunction of Mercury and Saturn - Early in the morning over North America, the planets Mercury and Saturn will appear in the sky only 0.3 degrees apart.

October, 2009

October 5 - Early Release Day from School

October 13 - Close Conjunction of Venus and Saturn. The two planets, Venus and Saturn, will appear only a half-degree apart in the early morning sky.

November, 2009

November 11 - Veterans Day Holiday

17 - 18 November - Leonid Meteor Shower Peaks

November 26-27 - Thanksgiving Holidays

December, 2009

December 13, 14 - Geminids Meteor Shower. Considered by many to be the best meteor shower in the heavens, the Geminids are known for producing up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak.

December 21 - Optional Teacher Workday/Inclement Weather Day

December 22-23 - Inclement Weather Days

December 24-January 1 - Christmas Break (includes some inclement weather days)

January, 2010

January 18 - Martin Luther King Holiday

January 22 - Mandatory Teacher Workday/Inclement Weather Day

January 29 - Mars Madness Star Party - The red planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Mars.

February, 2010

March, 2010

March 22 - Saturn at Opposition. The ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons. Saturn's rings will be nearly edge-on this year and will be very difficult to see.

April, 2010

April 2 - Optional Teacher Workday/Inclement Weather Day

April 5-9 - Spring Break (includes some inclement weather days)

May, 2008

May 31 - Memorial Day Holiday

June, 2010

June 9 - Last Day of School - Early Release for Students
